| Day 9. Wednesday/Tuesday | CHRISTMAS ISLAND - PENRHYN | (BLD) |
| Transfer to the airport for the 3 hour flight south to Penrhyn (Tongareva) Island, most northern of the Cook Islands. We cross back into eastern time and its tuesday. The Americans built a major runway here during Word War 2 in case hostilities extended this far east. The lagoon is large and deep with easy entrances and at times during the war large numbers of US Navy ships anchored here. The remains of a crashed B17 bomber remain as evidence of this bygone era. A tragic encounter with "Blackbirders" (South American slave traders) in the early 1800's, the pearl shell trade, and World War 2 have all played a part in shaping Penrhyn as it is today. Meet your fishing guides on arrival and commence fishing immediately. IMPORTANT THE GOOD NEWS - as air services to Penrhyn have been sporadic over recent years very few fishers have come here and the fishing is fabulous THE NOT SO GOOD - as tourists are a rarity there are no 'tourist' facilities! Accommodation is in comfortable local bungalows with flush toilets, warm (as in unheated) showers, and sporadic electricity. Meals are plentiful but simple and supplied by the local people, cell phone coverage is non existent, and email service intermittent! This tour is for those who want fabulous fishing and birdwatching and can do without sophisticated infrastructure. You will need to bring your own fishing gear as supplies are not available on the island. Baggage allowance is a total of 20 kilos including fishing gear! | ||
| Day 10. Wednesday - Day 12. Friday | PENRHYN | (BLD) |
